Two single mothers — a white convenience store worker (Melissa Leo) and a Mohawk woman (Misty Upham) living on the reservation — struggle with poverty as they raise their kids near the border between Canada and New York state. To make money, they smuggle illegal immigrants into the US over a little-known border crossing between the two countries. The only thing? They have to drive them over a treacherous frozen river which can give way at any time. Leo was nominated for Best Actress.

Robert De Niro and little Jodie Foster were both nominated for Oscars in Martin Scorsese’s frightening slice of New York City life in the harsh 1970s. De Niro is a haunted Vietnam vet turned New York cabbie who spends his days watching porn in a 42nd Street theater and driving at night. As he descends into madness he becomes obsessed with a beautiful political campaign worker (Cybill Shepherd) and an underage streetwalker (Foster). It can’t end well. With Harvey Keitel.

The one that started it all. Nerdy teen Peter Parker, (Tobey Maguire) is an orphan who has a crush on his neighbor, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). One day while on a trip to the science lab, he gets bitten by a spider and develops super-hero powers. All is well until the evil Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe) takes a drug that transforms him into the evil Green Goblin. It’s up to Peter/Spider-man to save the city and his favorite girl. Terrific fun.
