Council to introduce bill for ID cards for undocumented NYers

The City Council is scheduled to introduce legislation on Thursday to create municipal ID cards for undocumented New Yorkers — following through on an initiative pitched by the mayor during his February State of the City speech.

Sources gave few specifics on the bill, but said the cards would be available for use as identification by all New Yorkers.

In February, the mayor said he would push to create municipal ID cards so undocumented immigrants don’t have to “live their lives in the shadows.”

More than a half-dozen cities have introduced similar ID initiatives.
