Stan Helsing

The crude spoof movie “Stan Helsing” manages to deliver a few laughs, which is a few more than bigger-budget competitors like “Dance Flick” managed.

Two couples (Kenan Thompson of “Saturday Night Live” is the biggest name in the cast, unless you count a cameo by Leslie Nielsen) driving through the night to deliver some videos find themselves running into versions of Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Jason and other film frighteners. The hero, Stan, keeps denying all signs that he is the legendary monster killer Van Helsing. Among important issues raised are: How does Freddy use toilet paper? Did Jesus have his own Super Soaker loaded with holy water? Would Leatherface be scary if he were armed with a leaf blower instead of a chain saw?

Mostly the gags are unfortunate and amateurish, but this micro-budget flick at least has a semi-coherent plot and every 10 minutes or so there’s a flash of wit. One victim of torture found in a dungeon is told he looks so bad that “You’re like a really messed-up Paul Giamatti.” That’s cruel, dude.

Running time: 90 minutes. RatedR (crude humor, profanity, sexual situations, drug abuse). At the Village East, Second Avenue and 12th Street.
