City bus riders ‘fall’ for hybrids

The city’s hybrid buses can be a trip — literally.

Accidents and injuries on outer-borough bus routes have skyrocketed as high as 16 percent in the last year, and the MTA is blaming the hybrids’ jolting starts and stops.

Some drivers are having a hard time adjusting to the sudden accelerations of an electric vehicle, and riders are toppling over, said MTA bus chief Joe Smith.

Officials said they addressed the issue earlier this month by reprogramming a computer to make hybrids accelerate the same way as the rest of the fleet.
