Joba celebrates with Brut force

The celebration had begun before the media were allowed into the Yankees’ locker room, so there was no confirmation that Joba Chamberlain got to start the celebration, or that there was any debate in the front office or in the media about whether he should.

But if someday he becomes Mariano Rivera’s heir, let the record show that a jubilant Chamberlain pretty well closed the celebration around the champagne table after giving as much Chandon California Brut Classic as he received.

“I hope so,” he said. “If I didn’t, I’ll have to make it up.”

Frankly, Chamberlain didn’t much look like a guy going to the World Series for the first time, either, wearing thick goggles.

“You learn quick,” He said. “Man, this stuff stings.”

Not as much, probably, as having surrendered seven hits in 2 2/3 postseason innings going into Game 6. But when, following Juan Rivera’s one-out single to start the seventh in a 3-1 game, Chamberlain got the ball from Andy Pettitte, redemption turned out sweet.

BOX SCORE

Chamberlain got pinch hitter Maicer Izturis to chop up the middle, where Derek Jeter’s boot landed conveniently at Robinson Cano’s feet at the second-base bag. Chamberlain then retired Erick Aybar on a grounder Jeter did not botch. Two batters two outs, which made Joba, well . . . bubbly, afterwards.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything better than to be able to give the ball to Mo,” he said. “Couldn’t have plotted it any better. It’s weird, because you get more nervous watching these guys because you work so hard and fight for each other all year.

“To see them celebrate is awesome.”
