Hal: Boss a big part of this flag

This one’s for The Boss. That was the pronouncement last night from Hal Steinbrenner, moments after the Yankees clinched their 40th pennant with a 5-2 victory over the Angels in Game 6 of the ALCS.

“I think it means a lot to my dad,” Hal, the Yanks’ managing general partner, said in the clubhouse.

“All these players are doing it for him. We want to win this whole thing for him, and I think we feel he’s here. He’s a big part of it.”

Hal said his father watched last night’s game at home in Tampa and will be at the Stadium on Wednesday for the Yankees’ first World Series game since 2003.

“He’ll be excited to be here Wednesday night, that’s for sure,” Steinbrenner said. “It’s a lot of years, it’s been six, and [Joe] Girardi has done a great job. We’re all proud.”

What stands out about this team to the Baby Boss?

“What I like about this team is they really care about each other,” Steinbrenner said. “They are a family. They have all this ability, we know that, but they support each other and pick each other up. They never quit. They never think they’re out of a game.

“This team is amazing. Joe has done a great job. They never give up, no matter how many runs they’re down. They come back and they win.”
