Slender Marine Corps hat is a fashion win

A proposal to update the Marine Corps uniform by substituting the classic cap, called a “cover,” for a new, slenderized version didn’t go over so well.

Dudes in fear of emasculation, fret not — Marine officials have backpedaled and now say the men’s cover will not change one bit.

And that’s a shame, because we find the mockup rather fetching. So hang onto your old hats, naysayers, while we tell you what we love about the proposed new one:

1. It lost weight
Something we’ve all been trying to do for years. Enough said.

2. Minimalism is IN
Simpler, more streamlined—the revamped cover couldn’t be more on trend. For seasons now the most prevalent style statement has been “less is more,” so it would seem conservatives are lightening up (literally), and that’s a cause for celebration.

3. It’s just in time for the holidays
Since French commandos wear berets, we can only assume the “it looks too French” criticism comes from a resemblance to the kepi, a historical flat-top chapeau that Americans themselves sported during the Civil War… Anyway! We think the cover looks more like the topper the title character wears in “The Nutcracker. “ Regardless of where your faith lies, everyone can tip their hat to a little Christmas cheer.
