Weprin goes to bat for Mariano Rivera street

At least one candidate for council speaker is going to bat for Yankee great Mariano Rivera.

At a candidates’ forum in Manhattan Thursday, Queens Councilman Mark Weprin backed a proposal to rename River Street outside Yankee Stadium in honor of the pitcher.

Six of the candidates for council speaker participated in the forum at the Talking Transition site on Canal Street, but only Weprin said an exception should be made for Mo.

When the council members were asked whether street renamings or co-namings should be limited to people who are deceased, they all answered “yes.”

All, except for Democrat Weprin who said, “Yes — except for Mariano Rivera.”

The City Council is set to vote on naming the Bronx street after the legendary Yankee closer sometime next month.Yoav Gonen
