Jeter’s lasting memory of The Boss

Derek Jeter will never forget the first and last times he saw The Boss.

The Yankee captain was first approached by George Steinbrenner when he was only 18 and playing in the minors.

“He came up to me and talked to me by name, and I was shocked that he knew who I was,” Jeter said yesterday at the All-Star Game in Anaheim, Calif. “He said, ‘We expect big things from you’ — and I’ll always remember that, because first impressions you never forget.”

Jeter said he last saw The Boss in April on Opening Day, when he and manager Joe Girardi presented him with his World Series ring.

“He had an Ohio State ring on so I got to tease him and tell him to take it off,” Jeter said.

Steinbrenner demanded the best from his players, and it rubbed off on the entire roster, he said.

“He kinda looked at the baseball season like it was 12 games,” Jeter said. “He really expected us to win every game.”
