Going Gothic

The science behind the hand-built great cathedrals of Europe is explored in a new installment of Nova. Carved from a 100 million pounds of stone and sometimes more than a century in the making, some now teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse. To save them, engineers, architects, art historians, and computer scientists search the naves, bays, and bell-towers for clues to how the dream of these temples of human achievement and artistry became a reality. Among the churches explored are Chartres and St. Amiens in France.

A scam from Frasier

Jack (Alec Baldwin) is having a perfect day and succeeding at every task. He tries (again) to channel his winning streak into helping Liz (Tina Fey) figure out her relationship with Carol. Meanwhile, Jenna (Jane Krakowski) and Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) enlist the help of Kelsey Grammer (guest starring as himself) to pull off an ice cream scam. Elsewhere, Tracy (Tracy Morgan) is trying to shoot a commercial for the Boys and Girls Club.

Trick or treat?

Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) goes overboard celebrating Halloween and gets his nose out of joint when Haddie (Sarah Ramos) refuses to join in the fun. Meanwhile, Adam (Peter Krause) and Kristina (Monica Potter) are nervous about their son’s costume. Sarah’s (Lauren Graham) relationship with Gordon gets complicated.

Empty suit

So this season we learned that Don Draper was a drunk. He slept with diner waitresses, doctors, and nameless secretaries. We also learned that the agency Sterling, Cooper, Pryce and Draper was particularly adept at losing clients. We learned that Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) has no soul. We learned that if BettyDraper (January Jones) wasn’t in an episode, it was boring. Will “Mad Men” redeem itself?

Colbert report

Stephen Colbert’s recent appearance in Congress went over like a lead balloon. Here’s hoping the late-night host will do better cheering up the panel on “The View.” He makes his first appearance alongside Barbara Walters, and friends on Tuesday. Ariana Huffington, rescuer of journalists everywhere, also appears.
