Mayor Bloomberg yesterday fired back at Sen. Charles Schumer for knocking his campaign to oust even Democrats who vote against new gun-control laws.

“Number one, we’re running more ads against Republicans than Democrats. But let me just point out this is not a partisan issue,” the mayor said.

Schumer (D-NY) had said Bloomberg was wasting his money on TV ads targeting pro-gun Democrats like Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.)

“Frankly, I don’t think Bloomberg’s ads are effective,” Schumer told Time magazine. “The mayor of New York City putting ads against people in red states is not going to be effective.”

Bloomberg also has urged more than 2,000 New York Democratic donors to withhold contributions to pro-gun Democratic senators, including Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.

Schumer led the unsuccessful charge to enact expanded background checks and other new gun laws after the Newtown school massacre.

Bloomberg vowed to keep running ads and going after whoever stands in the way of new gun laws.

“If you vote to continue the carnage on our streets, I don’t care what party you’re in,” he said.
