UConn bet on these winners

The Big East Tournament has begun … well, what remains of it. That nagging reminder tapping you on the shoulder all season, letting you know how much things have changed, became a vicious punch to the gut at a mostly-empty Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. Thursday marks the only day-session — and four-game day — of what used to be one of college basketball’s most special events.

So, with the dearly departed in mind, Thursday’s picks are dedicated to the memory of Kemba Walker — who so graciously allowed us to ride his coattails to a championship — and UConn, even if they are no longer making memories in New York.

UConn (+3) over Memphis: The Tigers have the advantage of playing at home, but the Huskies have the luxury of having the best player — AAC Player of the Year Shabazz Napier. UConn, which won both meetings this season, could go on a deep run, carried by a star who embraces the big moment.

Providence (+5½) over St. John’s: The Red Storm’s entire season has been a sweat, so why would it be any different now? Both teams will be equally desperate, with a loss eliminating either from NCAA Tournament consideration, and even though St. John’s is deeper and more talented, Friars senior Bryce Cotton will give Providence a chance to win, even though that opportunity probably slips away.

Xavier (-1) over Marquette: The Golden Eagles kept things interesting for awhile, but entering the game with three straight losses, Marquette will be too worn down to win this physical matchup following back-to-back double-overtime losses.

UC Irvine (-11) over UC Riverside: The Big West regular-season champions are about balance. They rebound, play solid defense and have an incredibly well-rounded offensive attack. Even if their best aren’t at their best, the Anteaters will be fine. Plus, they’re the Anteaters. That’s just awesome.

2014 record: 4-1
