Giants report card

OFFENSE

It is almost as if someone transported different players into the uniforms of these guys. How can this talent go 1-for-14 on third down? Victor Cruz (10 rec., 164 yards, 1 TD) battled, but Hakeem Nicks managed only three catches on nine targets. Eli Manning (18-of-37, 217 yards) had his ninth INT and first lost fumble. New-look line wasn’t great, but wasn’t terrible.

Grade: F.

DEFENSE

For three quarters nothing to complain about. RB Jamaal Charles (18 car., 65 yards) was held in check and the Giants four three turnovers (two Alex Smith INTs) from a Chiefs offense that had none in the first three games. Reserve TE Sean McGrath was allowed too much room. Pass rush still was not close to good enough, nor was work on third down.

Grade: B-

SPECIAL TEAMS

Where to start? Josh Brown’s FG miss from 44 yards before halftime was a killer. Steve Weatherford’s 59-yard punt wasn’t bad, but coverage on Dexter McCluster’s 89-yard TD return was brutal. A nice punt return by Rueben Randle was wiped away by a Justin Trattou penalty. The Giants also gave the Chiefs a first down which led to a touchdown by lining up illegally on a fourth-quarter field-goal attempt.

Grade: F

COACHING

First things first, no way Tom Coughlin should have gone for it on fourth-and-1 from his the Giants’ 30 in the third quarter. This is mostly his baby on offense and right now it is embarrassingly bad, so it’s on the head man and Kevin Gilbride. Tom Quinn’s special teams have had some bad, bad breakdowns. Perry Fewell’s defense was active despite no real pass rush.
