This week’s couple: Holi-date cheer

Planning a date around the holidays in New York City is hit-or-miss. Parties, shopping and gift-wrapping leaves little time for a break, but if we take the time to step back, there’s plenty of festive fun to be had, like the American Ballet Theatre’s performance of “The Nutcracker” at BAM. That’s where we sent Julian, 32, and Sarah, 27, for their blind date, which included a backstage tour and Champagne. Did they have a jolly good time?

She said:

Julian isn’t someone I would typically be attracted to, but he is handsome and was easygoing about me being a few minutes late (I went in the wrong entrance). We only had about 20 minutes to get to know each other before the show started, so it was a brief first impression.

Going backstage before the show to see how “The Nutcracker” is put together behind the scenes was really special, and Julian was a gentleman throughout the evening. He was thoughtful enough to book a table at a nearby restaurant, Prospect, where we had dinner after the show. There, we got to know each other more. An Irish accent like Julian’s never hurts.

Even though the ballet put some obvious constraints on talking, I came away with enough to know I’d definitely go out with him again if he asks.

He said:

It was obvious upon meeting Sarah that we were in for a fun evening — she has a relaxing, easygoing personality. We were given a backstage tour before the performance. I’d never seen “The Nutcracker” before, so I was a bit wide-eyed with excitement.

After, we made our way to Prospect for dinner. Our conversation was traditional first date fodder. Sarah is well-traveled, cultured, and good natured. After dinner, we went into Manhattan for a quick nightcap at the Bourgeois Pig.

We exchanged numbers and made plans to meet up again in the new year when I get back from Ireland. If last night was any indicator, I’m sure it will be great fun.
