Time Inc. sees second exec exit this week

Another top digital person is heading for the exits at Time Inc. as part of its ongoing restructuring effort.

John Cantarella, the president of digital for the recently dissolved sports and news division at Time Inc., is out.

The move comes only days before the long-delayed relaunch of Time.com.

The relaunch date for Time.com is now set for March 6, insiders said. This time, the date seems firm, insiders said, ending launch delays that have dogged the project almost since its inception.

It has been nearly a year since Time magazine was able to convince parent Time Warner to spend several million dollars to relaunch the site and hire a staff headed by Newsweek veteran Ed Felsenthal.

So far, it has added about 35 editorial people, and traffic has been growing from 17 million last April to around 23 million in January.

Cantarella was the titular digital head of the news and sports group that included Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and, at least for the next few months, CNN Money.

The CNN Money joint venture dissolves on May 31, one of the casualties of the spinoff of Time Inc. from Time Warner.

Cantarella’s departure was not a total shock since his counterpart atop the other old division, Fran Hauser, president of digital for entertainment and style and the lifestyle division, was also cut loose this week. Hauser posted her farewell on Facebook this week.

Both Cantarella and Hauser were internal candidates to become the new chief technology officer, but Chief Executive Joe Ripp instead tapped former Amazon executive Colin Bodell, who started this week.
