L train to get a service boost

The hipsters have spoken.

So many riders are packing onto the L train every day, the MTA plans to boost service significantly next year—adding 8 more round trips on weekdays, and four more round trips on weekends.

It will shave off over a minute between trains on the L on weekend nights, and cut more than half a minute between trains on weekday evenings.

The popular line has seen almost a 100 percent increase in ridership on the L since 1998, reflecting a large boost in trendy Northern Brooklyn neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Bushwick.

The boost is part of a proposed $4.3 million increase in service that will also increase the number of trains on the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, E, and F lines.

The 2 and 3 lines will see an increase in 6 weekday round trips, which will reduce wait times by almost a minute. The 4 and 5 will be boosted by 2 round trips, and the A by 2 round trips.

Two round trips will also be added to weekday E and F service.

There will also be an increase in weekday afternoon and early evening service on the G, and an extension of the M to Essex Street in Manhattan on weekends.
