De Blasio clowns with press, takes selfie on City Hall steps

Mayor de Blasio was so bent on fixing his strained relationship with the press that he spent five minutes Tuesday chatting with reporters on the steps of City Hall — before snapping a selfie of the group.

The impromptu gaggle, which ended with the mayor taking a group shot, came after weeks of complaints over his availability to the press corps.

Most notably, de Blasio recently dodged inquiries about his two-vehicle caravan violating traffic rules — just days after unveiling a sweeping traffic safety plan — despite telling reporters he would answer all questions.

“The media is doing its job,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

A short time later, de Blasio and counsel Maya Wiley strolled around for 40 minutes, before he sat with the press.

The conversation centered on his walking habits.

“I was realizing that I was inside and it just made no sense to be inside,” Hizzoner said of his outdoor meeting.

Two hours after the media sit-down, de Blasio tweeted a shot his photographer took of him taking the selfie.

The message cc’d Ellen Degeneres, whose selfie with the hottest Hollywood actors at the Oscars was retweeted 3.3 million times.

De Blasio’s was re-tweeted 41 times as of early Tuesday night.
