The challengers to Steve Kerr for Knicks job

Here’s a look at the likely candidates Phil Jackson could choose from to replace Mike Woodson:

Steve Kerr

Unless something crazy happens like Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau gets fired, the former Suns GM and current TNT analyst is the prohibitive favorite with his close relationship with Jackson, sky-high basketball IQ and wit.

Derek Fisher

Still playing backup point guard with Oklahoma City, but says he’s retiring. Should get an interview pending playoff run, but seems natural for assistant job after winning five titles in LA with the Zen Master.

Jim Cleamons

Bucks assistant won nine titles on Jackson’s staff and his future is up in the air after the team was sold. A source says Cleamons would love a Jackson reunion and as an assistant could help mold Kerr.

Bill Cartwright

As Suns GM, Kerr once hired “Mr. Bill’’ to coach big man Amar’e Stoudemire. The former Knicks center was on Jackson’s staff in Chicago for two seasons.

Ron Harper

The combo guard played from 1994 to 2001 on Jackson’s Bulls and Lakers teams. He was a Pistons assistant for two seasons in 2005 and ’06 and now runs a basketball academy in Wayne, NJ.

Kurt Rambis

Was on Jackson’s staff in Los Angeles and still is with the Lakers with the embattled Mike D’Antoni. He knows the triangle offense.
