Nets save some dough by standing pat at trade deadline

SAN FRANCISCO — Apparently the Nets decided spending $190 million on their roster this season was enough.

Thursday’s trade deadline came and went without Brooklyn doing anything beyond the Marcus Thornton trade that went down Wednesday afternoon in which Jason Terry and Reggie Evans were shipped to Sacramento. That pushed the Nets’ payroll and luxury-tax commitments just over $190 million for this season – easily a league record.

The Nets made inquiries about adding a player using the Disabled Player Exception they received when Brook Lopez was lost for the season, though no deal ever came to fruition. Lakers big man Jordan Hill being the most prominently mentioned target.

The Nets’ roster now stands at 13 players, meaning they have two roster spots open to sign free agents. Doing so would bring significant tax penalties, however, as adding one more minimum salary would result in an additional $3 million or so in luxury taxes.
