Deadly winter storm hits Northeast: the latest

A powerful Nor’easter slammed the New York City region Thursday morning, delaying trains, disrupting air travel and making a slushy mess of the a.m. commute.

As of late afternoon, more than 6,500 flights were grounded in the US, including 493 at LaGuardia, 328 at Kennedy and 620 at Newark airports, according to FlightAware.com and the Port Authority.

A pregnant woman died in tragic circumstances in New York after she was hit by a vehicle clearing snow. The 36-year-old victim’s baby is alive but in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, parents are enraged that New York City schools are still open and schools chancellor Carmen Farina has fanned the flames, cluelessly stating: “It’s absolutely a beautiful day out there.”

“Today” show weather man Al Roker also blasted Mayor Bill de Blasio for the decision to open schools. The mayor effectively told Roker to stick to reading the weather.

We’ll be collecting the latest transit information, snow forecasts and amazing pictures and video emerging from across the Northeast in the live blog below. Stay safe!
