Woman jumps to death on train platform

A woman jumped to her death in front of a subway train in Midtown on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The unidentified victim, believed to be in her 60s, threw herself in front of the southbound E train at Lexington Avenue and East 53rd Street just after noon, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Horrified riders on the train learned of the death while their train was being held at the station.

Michael Jones, 35, who was on the train’s third car, said an MTA worker walked through the cars to explain the delay.

“He said that a woman was pinned underneath the train and that she was dead,” Jones recalled. “So we knew by the time we got off the train that a woman was dead.”

Passengers were let off the train in about 10 minutes.

“It’s sad, but this keeps happening,” Jones said. “Maybe this should be a wake-up call. Perhaps protective measures need to be put in place, similar to what they have in Europe that prevents people from approaching the tracks.”
