PSAL boys basketball playoff roundup: Gompers rallies past Beach Channel

Carlos Galan scored 15 points and Pierce Smith followed with 13 as No. 16 Gompers rallied from a 14-point deficit to knock off No. 17 Beach Channel, 53-51, in the opening round of the PSAL Class AA boys basketball playoffs.

The Panthers (13-10), who also received 10 points and 18 rebounds from Ohndo Smith, outscored the Dolphins 31-15 in the second half and will meet top-seeded Lincoln in the second round March 1 at 5 p.m.

No. 15 Campus Magnet 64, No. 18 Manhattan Center 46: Jordan Parks pumped in 26 points and Tarik Raynor and Samuel Durodola added 13 points apiece for the Bulldogs (11-6), who will face No. 2 Boys & Girls in the second round March 1 at 5 p.m. Manhattan Center finishes the year 10-8.

CLASS A

No. 20 Grover Cleveland 72, No. 45 Economics & Finance 52: The Tigers are now 10-5 and meet No. 13 South Bronx March 1 at 5 p.m. in the first round. Economics & Finance is 7-8.

No. 22 A.P. Randolph 69, No. 43 Hunter College 65: Jasper Lee scored 26 points and Pranab Karki added 13 for Hunter College (10-6) in defeat. Randolph improves to 12-5 and will face No. 11 HS For Construction in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m.

No. 23 Banneker 45, No. 42 Stuyvesant 43: The Warriors improved to 10-5 and will meet No. 10 Bayard Rustin in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m. Stuyvesant finishes the year 8-7.

No. 24 New Utrecht 62, No. 41 Murry Bergtraum 48: Jordan Paul scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Douglas Holland II added 17 and Owen Salim had 13 for New Utrecht (11-4), which meets ninth-seeded Brooklyn Collegiate in the first round March 1 at 5 p.m. Murry Bergtraum completes the year 9-6.

No. 25 John Adams 47, No. 40 Beacon 44: The Spartans (10-5) visit eighth-seeded Smith in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m. Beacon completes its year at 9-8.

No. 26 Jamaica 67, No. 39 Far Rockaway 33: Johnny Gomez scored 25 points and Steven Stephenson followed with 24 points for Jamaica (11-3), which faces No. 7 Acorn in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m. Far Rockaway is 8-7.

No. 27 Springfield Gardens 49, No. 38 Martin Luther King Jr. 48: Chukwuemek Okoloji scored 15 points and Vincent Jackson Jr. had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Springfield Gardens (10-5), which takes on No. 6 and defending city champion Bedford Academy in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m. MLK is 9-8.

No. 28 Walton 57, No. 37 Global Studies 53: Jovanni Rodriguez totaled 20 points and 11 rebounds, Bernard Edwards had 16 points and Bryan Barahona tallied 10 assists for Walton (13-7). The Wildcats meet No. 5 Graphic Communications in the first round March 1 at 5 p.m. Global Studies is 8-7.

CLASS B

No. 22 Manhattan Village 59, No. 43 Robert F. Wagner 43: Alton Bennett made 6-of-8 free throws, scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Brenton Howell had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Manhattan Village (9-4), which meets No. 11 Network Technology March 2 at 5 p.m. Robert F. Wagner finishes its season 7-8.

No. 23 Pace 44, No. 42 Chelsea 38: Pace (12-5) takes on No. 10 Newcomers March 2 at 5 p.m. in the first round while Chelsea finishes the year 6-7.

No. 24 Law Enforcement & Public Safety 52, No. 42 Math, Science & Engineering 34: Courtney Williams and Dymere Carson (seven assists) each scored 11 points and Shamel Doctor tallied eight points and 10 rebounds for Law Enforcement (10-7), which meets No. 9 EBC/Bushwick Leaders in the first round March 1 at 5 p.m.. Chris Yates paced Math, Science & Engineering (6-7) with 15 points.

No. 26 Brooklyn College Academy 74, No. 39 New Explorations 47: David Tait had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Jonathan Chisolm contributed 24 points and five assists for Brooklyn College Academy. The Bobcats (9-6) face seventh-seeded Teachers Prep March 2 at 5 p.m. New Explorations is 8-9.

No. 27 School of the Future 71, No. 38 Foundations Academy 60: Maurice Gatson notched 20 points, Elon Sayles had 16 and Patrick Johnson 14 and nine rebounds for School of the Future, which led 21-5 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs (12-5) meet No. 6 Cobble Hill March 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the first round. Foundations Academy is now 7-8.

No. 28 East Side Community 63, No. 37 Bathgate 56: Anthony Parsons and Diego Emiliano scored 13 points apiece for Bathgate (10-11) in a losing effort. East Side Community (10-7) advances to face in the first round March 2 at 5 p.m.

No. 34 Info Tech 69, No. 31 Health Professions 65: The Black Hawks are now 9-6 and meet No. 2 Pathways Prep March 2 at 5 p.m. in the first round. Health Professions is 9-8.
