City’s $2B in found money

It’s raining tax revenues.

After weeks of issuing dire budget alarms, city officials acknowledged yesterday that tax revenues were coming in $2 billion higher than projected three months ago.

That virtually wiped out the remaining $2.4 billion deficit that had been projected for fiscal 2012, which starts on July 1.

Higher tax collections from businesses were expected to account for most of the $2 billion increase.

A source said the new budget would also include $200 million in savings from the proposed elimination of pension bonuses paid to cops and firefighters.

But the revenue gusher wasn’t enough to spare the 6,166 teachers Mayor Bloomberg threatened to get rid of last November, including 4,666 through layoffs.

City officials said those remain on the table because Gov. Cuomo’s budget proposal contained a $2.1 billion cut in anticipated aid.

Bloomberg has suggested 21,000 teachers could lose their jobs.
