Kid stuff

Today

Bully proof: Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Bear and other classic characters from the “Uncle Remus” folk tales (above) return to rescue a bullied boy in “Rabbit Sense,” an original, Cajun-flavored musical performed at TADA! Youth Theater. Through tomorrow, 2 and 4 p.m., $25 for adults, $15 for kids. 15 W. 28th St., between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, second floor; 212-252-1619, ext. 128.

Modern materials: Most of MoMA is pretty hands-off, but the brand-new Material Lab lets visitors experiment with everything from paper and metal to velvet and rubber as they create pieces inspired by artists on display. Plus, you can be among the first to try the Microsoft Digital Art Technology Preview, a recently developed virtual-painting application. 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., free with museum admission ($20 for adults, free for kids). 11 W. 53rd St., between Fifth and Sixth avenues; 212-708-9431.

Tomorrow

Fiddledeedee: Take a break from the usual kid-centric songs at the Americana Family Jamboree, where Elena and Boo of Demolition String Band will bust out fiddles, banjos, mandolins and more to play tunes by Johnny Cash, Leadbelly, Hank Williams and others. 2 to 3:30 p.m., $10 for adults, $5 for kids. The Living Room, 154 Ludlow St., between Rivington and Stanton streets; 212-673-5179.

Sword play: There’s no shortage of world dance in the big city, but we bet you’ve never seen the traditional long-sword dances of northern England and Scotland performed live. Be at the Brooklyn Museum when authentic folk dancers present “Half Moon Sword Ale,” and you can knock yet another genre off your list. 2:30 p.m., free with museum admission ($10 for adults, free for kids). 200 Eastern Parkway; 718-638-5000.

Still to come

In the swim: Beat the winter-break blahs at the Players Theatre, where there’ll be an arts-and-crafts workshop before Thursday’s matinee performance of “The Little Mermaid.” Ages 3 and up. Thurs., workshop at 1 p.m., show at 2 p.m., $25 to $40. 115 MacDougal St., between Third and Bleecker streets; 212-352-3101.
