5 possible Apple surprises

Apple’s product launches are never about one thing. As visionary founder and pitchman Steve Jobs used to say for his encore, they are about “one more thing.”

The tech giant is widely expected to show off new iPhones at a Cupertino, Calif., event starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, including the updated iPhone 5S and a colorful, cheaper 5C version.

Aside from new phones, here are five other potential developments — some real, some rumored — that could whip Apple fans into a frenzy:

1. Apple TV

It would be mind blowing if Apple actually had a a super-flat HDTV to show off, but more likely is an update of its set-top box that streams Internet content to TVs. Apple is competing with Google’s Chromecast plug-in device that aims to turn any TV into a streaming machine. Apple should look to counter with more programming offerings through Apple TV and refreshed TV software.

2. iPods

The iPod has been featured prominently at iPhone events like last year’s with new Touches and Nanos. The upcoming event should give Apple fans a glimpse at the future of the digital player. It may even signal the death of the classic iPod as Apple could discontinue the device.

3. iRadio

Speaking of music, Apple has already announced that its iTunes Radio service is coming, providing ad-supported music listening. Any new Apple devices would have to play up iRadio, which is set to launch within weeks.

4. iOS 7

The new mobile software is key for any product announcements, and in years past included big features like the voice-activated Siri function. Consumers have had a peak at iOS 7, but it will be released to all in the coming weeks.

Apple usually has some favored developers, such as Twitter or Yahoo!, on hand to reveal new apps with tighter Apple integration.

5. Watches and iPads

Apple watchers also are waiting for any signs of new iPads or a smartwatch. Last year, the iPad Mini got its own special event more than a month after the iPhone. Apple is under pressure to show off anything new after Samsung revealed its Gear smartwatch just last week. It would be the biggest “one more thing” from Apple if it had a watch up its sleeve.
