Cut Texans rookies claim they were smoking cigar, not pot

To be blunt, they claim they weren’t smoking one.

Three Texans rookies were cut by the team on Monday, and ESPN.com reported it was related to marijuana use in the team hotel on Saturday before the team’s game in Kansas City.

Sam Montgomery, Cierre Wood and Willie Jefferson were inactive for the 17-16 loss, then were handed more significant punishment by the floundering Texans.

Montgomery told ComCast Houston he walked into the room and the other two rookies were smoking a cigar. Jefferson’s agent, Chris Cannon, said he is considering taking action.

“We’re discussing the possibility of filing a grievance,” Cannon told the website. “I need to be in touch with them and really figure if that’s the best route to take.”

Montogmery, a linebacker out of LSU, was taken in the third round by the Texans, while Wood (Notre Dame running back) and Jefferson (Stephen F. Austin linebacker) were undrafted free agents.

Linebacker Brooks Reed told ESPN he was disappointed with the actions of his teammates.

“I don’t understand why they did it,” Reed said. “They had the opportunity of their lives and they just kind of threw it away. I don’t have too much to say about it. It’s really unfortunate. We lost a lot of depth for that game. They were great players and they had a lot of potential. We’re just going to find more guys that are more dedicated to the cause.”

Texans coach Gary Kubiak would not comment on the specifics of the situation.

“I won’t discuss team rules and those type of things,” Kubiak said during his Monday news conference. “I’ll make decisions based on a body of work in everything I do. I’ve got five months of work invested in those three young men and made a decision today to move forward.”
