HOOPS: Zags No. 2

Gonzaga moved to No. 2 in the Associated Press’ Top 25 yesterday for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs were third last week, matching their previous best ranking. Indiana remained No. 1, with Duke at No. 3 followed by Michigan and Miami.

Davante Gardner scored a career-high 26 points as No. 22 Marquette (20-7, 11-4 Big East) was 74-71 winner over No. 12 Syracuse (22-6, 10-5) in Milwaukee. C.J. Fair had 20 points for Syracuse, which has lost three of five.

Fuquan Edwin scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds left, to give host Seton Hall (14-15, 3-13 Big East) a 66-65 victory over Villanova (18-11, 9-7), snapping a nine-game losing streak.

Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 39 points — 12 in overtime — and No. 6 Kansas (24-4, 12-3 Big 12) rallied for a 108-96 win at Iowa State (19-9, 9-6) for coach Bill Self’s 500th career win.

NBA: Fisher joins OKC

Derek Fisher, the 38-year-old guard who won five NBA titles with theLakers, signed a contract with the Thunder. He played nine games for the Mavericks this season before being released in December.

Wilson Chandler scored 23 points in place of an injured Danilo Gallinari (thigh) in the Nuggets’ 119-108 victory over the Lakers. Dwight Howard had 15 points but missed 11 of his last 12 free throws. … Paul Pierce scored 26 points, including seven straight in overtime, as the Celtics beat the Jazz 110-107.

WNBA: Libs sign two

The Liberty re-signed guard-forward Essence Carson and signed forward Katie Smith, a 14-year veteran who has played with Minnesota, Detroit, Washington and Seattle. The Libs open the season at Connecticut on May 25, and face Tulsa in their home opener on May 31 in Newark.

NHL: Malkin sidelined

Penguins star Evgeni Malkin, injured in Friday’s game against the Panthers, has been diagnosed with a concussion and placed on injured reserve retroactive to Feb. 22.
