Man’s foot sliced off after driver backs into him

An elderly man had his foot sliced off this morning, after a driver backed into him and threw the senior citizen into a Queens store window, witnesses said.

The driver was backing into a parking spot near Queens Boulevard and Hoover Avenue at about 8:40 a.m. but didn’t see the elderly man, according to witness John Attanasio, 24.

“It was a freak accident,” he said.

The driver was rushing into the spot, put his Acura into reverse and “backed up at least 20 mph” and “absentmindedly hit a man,” Attanasio said.

“His bone was completely shattered, the bone was coming out of his ankle,” said Attanasio. “The ambulance put his foot next to his leg on the stretcher, it was horrible.”

Ted Barbery, 85, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, police said. He was listed in critical, but stable condition.

A parking meter, street sign and window of a UPS store were leveled in the accident.

“I called 911 at 8:40 a.m., when I saw the man under the car saying ‘Help me, help me!’ and then the driver put the car in drive and took off up the block,” Attanasio said.

“I told him to relax and I called his wife to tell her what happened.”

Cops apprehended the reckless driver about three blocks away, officials and witnesses said. Charges are pending.
