Giants’ Diehl not sure of future as he rehabs knee

Giants tackle David Diehl, entering his 11th NFL year, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after the season ended, the team confirmed yesterday.

Diehl, who’s entering the final year of his contract and is due to make $4.475 million this season and who will be 33 in September, has been rehabbing the knee at the Giants Timex Performance Center while news of fellow veterans being released has surfaced in recent weeks.

To date, the Giants have not indicated whether they plan to cut Diehl or restructure his contract. Fellow tackle Will Beatty and guard Kevin Boothe are free agents and a priority to re-sign.

The Giants already have released veterans Michael Boley, Chris Canty and Ahmad Bradshaw. Diehl missed three games early last season and came off the bench for four others, though he finished the season as the team’s starting right tackle after Sean Locklear suffered a knee injury.

“The thing you realize at an early age is that as an NFL player you have an expiration date on you and it comes with a price tag,” Diehl told Newsday. “Nothing has been said to me yet, but that’s all things you can’t control. Getting my knee right was the number one thing I wanted to do in the offseason. I know that I’m capable of a lot, I know that I’m still able to play this game to a high level now that I’m going to be healthy.

“Let the chips go where they may.”
