NBC has bought into the “Wizard of Oz” TV craze.
The Peacock Network has bought “Emerald City,” an “Oz”-themed drama created by Matthew Arnold (“Siberia”), according to deadline.com.
That now brings the number of “Oz” TV projects to three.
CBS is developing “Dorothy” — a medical soap based on characters from L. Frank Baum’s classic novel, while Syfy is developing a miniseries, “Warriors of Oz,” which it’s billing as a “fantasy-action” interpretation of the original “Wizard of Oz.”
“Emerald City,” which Arnold will executive-produce and write, is described as “a dark reimagining” of “Oz” a la HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” according to deadline.com.
All of the projects are linked to the 75th anniversary of the big-screen classic, starring Judy Garland. The original movie will be re-released in 3D and follows this year’s hit film, “Oz The Great And Powerful,” starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff.
