“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” surged at the weekend box office yesterday to upset “One Direction: This is Us,” which seemed to have the top spot locked up Sunday.
The civil-rights drama took in $20 million over the long holiday, winning its third straight weekend.
Tracking services on Sunday had given the crown to the concert film featuring the red-hot British boy band, based on estimates. It ended up with $18 million.
