Plea to MTA: Bring back Select Bus service vehicle blinking lights

Let there be light — any light!

Two East side City Council members are begging the MTA to reinstall blinking lights on the bottom of its Select Bus service vehicles, which were removed in January.

Daniel Garodnick and Melissa Mark-Viverito — both Democrats whose districts have SBS routes — sent a letter to the MTA asking to bring back the lights on the bottom of the buses.

In addition to traveling in a special lane and the off-board payment system, the lights were one of the most visible features of the buses.

But the distinctive blue lights were removed after complaints that they were visually too close to police lights.

The two Council members say that the absence of the lights makes it confusing for riders, especially the elderly or visually impaired.

“We are open minded to color,” the letter states.

City Councilman Vincent Ignizio led the charge to have the lights removed. He pointed out that blue flashing lights are reserved for emergency vehicles under state law.

The MTA agreed to make a change and promised to come up with a new color.

But two months later, the buses — which travel in a specially cordoned off traffic lane and feature off-board payment — still have no lights.

“We’re still assessing our options,” an MTA spokesman said.
