Prisoner escapes from custody in Brooklyn

A prisoner awaiting arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court escaped from police custody today, law enforcement sources said.

Ramon Ortega, 36, got away at about 2:15 p.m. after he took a bathroom break, the sources said.

Ortega fled as he and another prisoner were being escorted back to their holding cell on an upper story of the 120 Schermerhorn St. courthouse, said the sources.

Ortega was awaiting arraignment on charges of petit larceny and possession of stolen property brought by officers from the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville.

One source said Ortega probably would have been freed without bail if he’d just waited to see a judge.

Cops were hunting for Ortega last night.
