One man injured and another killed in railroad accidents

A Long Island Rail Road track worker miraculously survived getting zapped by the third rail Monday on Long Island just hours after a Metro-North track worker was killed when he was run over by a train in Manhattan.

The LIRR employee was working on a stretch of LIRR track in Babylon at 10:30 a.m. when he fell and singed his leg on the third rail.

He was treated for serious burns to his leg at Good Samaritan Hospital, an MTA spokesperson said.

Just before 1 a.m., an 8-year Metro-North veteran died when a Hudson line train, heading to Poughkeepsie, ran over him on Park Avenue and East 106th Street. James Romansoff, 58, was restoring power to the tracks after a weekend maintenance project.

He was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he later died.

The MTA said in statement that they are working with the Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to “re-examine our procedures and protocols to ensure we are performing our jobs with safety as the paramount concern.”
