Jets owner does ‘penalty’ pushups at practice

The penalty push-ups began at Jets practice Wednesday and even owner Woody Johnson got in on the act.

Coach Rex Ryan reinstituted the policy of the entire team doing 10 push-ups every time a penalty is committed in practice with the offending player standing and watching. Members of the organization on the field also got into the act, including Johnson, team president Neil Glat and general manager John Idzik.

According to Ryan, the team did 30 push-ups. He brought the practice back after the team was flagged 20 times in Sunday’s 27-20 win over the Bills. The Jets lead the league with 34 penalties.

“We’re 32nd in the league, probably closer to 33rd if that was possible,” Ryan said. “It’s just not us. That is not who we are. We’re trying to fix it and we will fix it.”

WR Santonio Holmes put up a career-high 154 receiving yards on Sunday and caught the game-winning touchdown. Is he ready to say he’s all the way back from his foot injury of a year ago?

“ No. I won’t do that to myself,” Holmes said. “I said I have a long ways to go. It’s only my third game back from a full year recovering. [I] didn’t have a lot of chances to practice up until this point and I still have a lot of learning and a lot of physical things to continue working on, such as staying in my rehab regimen. So I still have a long ways to go.”

Holmes, who suffered a Lisfranc injury in his left foot last Sept. 30, said he still feels pain in the foot.

“It still feels the same,” he said. “But mentally, I have to challenge myself every day I get an opportunity to practice and on game days to just continue focusing on making strides and not worry about what the foot is doing.”
