Marts up

Stocks gained yesterday, pushing the S&P 500 within striking distance of its all-time closing high of 1,565.15 set on Oct. 9, 2007, as strong data on home prices and manufacturing fueled optimism about the economy. The Dow rose 111.90 points, to end at 14,559.65.

Housing gains

Single-family home prices started the year with the biggest annual increase in six-and-a-half years. All 20 cities in the S&P/Case Shiller composite logged gains on a yearly basis, with New York rising for the first time in over two years.

Inside charges

US Attorney Preet Bharara said former Foundry Networks executive David Riley illegally leaked tips about the company to analyst Matthew Teeple, and Teeple then passed the information to others who traded on it.
