News Corp flash funds hundreds of classroom projects

News Corp has “flash funded” hundreds of classroom projects for which Brooklyn schoolteachers had sought contributions on DonorsChoose.org, the charity Web site said Tuesday.

The company’s effort “will bring books, instruments, supplies and technology to thousands of Brooklyn public- and charter-school students,” DonorsChoose.com said.

News Corp, publisher of The Post, fulfilled 279 project requests from 207 teachers, including paying off balances on projects that had been partially funded.

The donation was $250,000, plus $25,000 to match employee contributions.

“We at News Corp are strong believers in the power of education to open doors of opportunity for disadvantaged youth, and so we welcome this chance to honor teachers and help students throughout Brooklyn on Teacher Appreciation Day,” said company CEO Robert Thomson.

Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org, welcomed the gift.

“Thanks to the generosity of News Corp and all of the individual donors who gave to these Brooklyn projects, we’ll fulfill a lot of classroom dreams today,” Best said.

“We’re honored to recognize these teachers for their creativity and perseverance on behalf of their students.”

One teacher, Jess D’Amato of PS 15 in Red Hook, made a request for an artist from the Brooklyn Arts Council to come help her first-graders rebuild an old mural on the school’s exterior that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

“This grant is huge for the community, not just the school community. The exterior needs to display what’s going on inside, and there’s a lot of positive things going on here,” D’Amato, said, adding that the final design is still under development.
