Bronx native Rector still shopping for a college

Bronx native Shane Rector of prep powerhouse South Kent (Conn) said he hopes to visit Butler, Texas A&M and Missouri, and holds additional offers from Seton Hall, Western Kentucky and Virginia Tech. The 6-foot point guard, who had 12 points and eight assists in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game at the Barclays Center Saturday night, committed to Rutgers in late January, but opened up his recruitment when head coach Mike Rice was fired amid the controversial video of him abusing players was released.

Rector has kept Rutgers on his list, though he isn’t sure how the reported hiring of Lakers assistant coach Eddie Jordan, a Scarlet Knight alum, will effect him.

“I knew he was up for the job and I just have to see where it goes from here,” Rector said. “If he contacts me, I’m going to have to see what his plans are for my style of play, see if it’s still a good fit or not.”

He is down to Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Fordham, Seton Hall, Duquesne and West Virginia.

“I’ll probably know [where I’m going before May 22], but I will still announce it then at my school,” he said after scoring 16 points in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game.

Gill St. Bernard’s (N.J.) point guard Jaren Sina, who didn’t play Saturday after undergoing a hernia operation, went on an official visit to Alabama and will have an in-home visit with new Northwestern coach Chris Collins on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1 sharpshooter committed to Alabama his sophomore year before de-committing and signing with Northwestern. When coach Bill Carmody was fired, Sina opened up his recruitment.

“The next few days I’m going to keep evaluating it, sit down with my family and see what’s going on,” Sina said. “I’ll keep going through the process the next five-to-seven days.”

Seton Hall and Indiana are also involved, and Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean “has been recruiting me pretty heavy,” Sina said.

Thomas Jefferson guard Jaquan Lynch remains committed to Florida International despite former head coach Richard Pitino leaving to take the job at Minnesota and bringing assistant Kimani Young, Lynch’s lead recruiter, with him. The 6-foot-1 shooting guard said he is eager to see who FIU hires to replace Pitino.

“I’m waiting, it’s tough because it was surprising what happened,” Lynch said. “But everything is [a] business. I have no choice but to respect it.”
