Pacers coach Vogel was once on Letterman

INDIANAPOLIS — Frank Vogel, NBA head coach, Indiana Pacers. Also available for barbecues and charity events — he’ll brush his teeth while spinning a basketball on the end of the toothbrush.

Your first question might be what would possess someone to try that in the first place, but it landed Vogel, 39, on David Letterman’s “Stupid Human Tricks” segment as an eighth grader back in 1986. He still can perform the stunt.

“I did it at a charity thing for George Hill, at a museum that George had his function at,” said Vogel, a product of Wildwood Crest, N.J. “And I do it at backyard barbecues for my daughter’s friends all the time. They always ask me to do it.”

Yeah, not too many kids ask Dad to diagram pick-and-roll plays. Vogel’s trick has been getting a lot of clicks on YouTube lately.

“Nobody even knew about it until I took the job, maybe a few weeks after…when they put it up on YouTube,” Vogel said. “They actually took it down because [Letterman] was with NBC when I was on there, so I don’t know if NBC … claimed copyright infringement or whatever and took it off. It wasn’t on there for a while. But I guess it’s back on there now.”

His players know all about it, but have no desire to imitate him.

“I’m not going to try that one,” Hill said.
