After ‘fried chicken’ comment, Garcia, Woods shake hands at U.S. Open

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia had their face-to-face meeting since Garcia’s “fried chicken” comment caused a media firestorm last month.

Garcia approached Woods at the driving range as players arrived at Merion for practice rounds with the U.S. Open teeing off on Thursday. Garcia and Woods had a brief exchange, according to ESPN.com.

“I’m not going there,” Woods said when asked about the exchange on the range.

The Spaniard has apologized twice since the racially charged comments took the rivals’ feud to a new level. The two had exchanged shots through the media over an incident at The Players Championship where Garcia thought Woods used poor etiquette by approaching his clubs and exciting the crowd during his back swing.

During a Ryder Cup awards dinner for the Europeans in May, Garcia was asked if he’d have Woods over for dinner during U.S. Open week.

“We will have him round every night,” Garcia said. “We will serve fried chicken.”

Garcia apologized to Woods through the media and said this would be his chance to talk in person with the world’s top player.

“We talked to his manager and asked him if he wanted us to call Tiger, or wait for Merion and do it there face to face,” Garcia said. “And they said they would rather do it there. There’s nothing we can do, so we’ll wait until we get there and we’ll talk.”
