Two thugs taken down by phone wielding grandma

Two thugs proved no match for a feisty Howard Beach grandma armed with her house phone yesterday.

The would-be home invaders tried to push their way into the house of Margaret Mazzio, 75, around 1:30 p.m. — but the elderly Queens woman beat them back with the device, causing them to flee, family members said.

One of the perps “started coming inside the house, and my mother-in-law laid into him with her house phone. She swung and hit him right in the head,’’ proud daughter-in-law Robyn Mazzio told The Post.

“Then he lunged in at her like he was going to attack her, and my sister-in-law grabbed him by the arms and threw him out the door.”

Cops said the perps were wearing Fed-Ex vests over sweatshirts when they knocked on the door to the home on 90th Street.

Neighbors said they had recently spotted the two men suspiciously walking up and down the street but didn’t realize that they were casing the joint.

“My sister-in-law asked the guy, ‘Where is the thing to sign for the package?’ He goes, ‘We’re waiting for the truck to come’ ” around the corner, Robyn Mazzio said.

One of the men kept nervously checking at his cell phone, flipping it open and closed as if he were getting texts, she said.

“The two guys were standing in the doorway. My niece tried to push through the doorway to go outside, and the guy wouldn’t move,’’ Robyn Mazzio said.

That’s when Granny clocked him, her daughter joined in, and the pair fled, she said.

Cops said the perps are still in the wind.
