HOOPS: Hollins says Grizzlies won’t renew contract
Lionel Hollins said the Grizzlies have told him they will not renew his contract as head coach, according to WMC-TV in Memphis. He is the winningest coach in the franchise’s history coming off the team’s first trip to the Western Conference finals.
Hollins has been the Grizzlies’ coach since 2009, and led them to a franchise-best 56-26 record this season. He is a candidate for the Nets head coaching vacancy.
Former NBA All-Star Mookie Blaylock was released from the hospital and is in jail, charged with vehicular homicide in a car crash south of Atlanta. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license, making an improper lane change and crossing the median in the head-on crash that killed a 43-year-old woman in Jonesboro on May 31.
Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau and Pelicans coach Monty Williams will join returning Jim Boeheim and work the next three years under coach Mike Krzyzewski for USA Basketball. They will replace Mike D’Antoni and Nate McMillan.
Maurice Cheeks was hired as head coach by the Pistons. Cheeks last coached in 2008 with the 76ers.
NFL: ‘Pacman’ Jones in legal trouble again
Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has been arrested and jailed on an assault charge after police said he tried to hurt a woman, court documents show. He is accused of striking a woman on June 5, and was arrested Monday and was released on his own recognizance.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees is suing former teammate Kevin Houser for allegedly advising him to invest $160,000 in tax credits that turned out to be bogus. The suit claims Houser mishandled Brees’ money and failed to disclose his own financial interests in the investments he was promoting.
Ravens Fullback Vonta Leach said he expects to be cut or traded as he and the team could not work out an agreement on his salary this season.
NHL: Oilers tab Eakins as head coach
The Oilers hired Dallas Eakins as their new coach. Eakins, who was a candidate for the Rangers’ opening, spent the past four seasons with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Eakins is the fourth coach in five seasons for the Oilers, who have not made the playoffs since reaching the Stanley Cup final in 2006.
The Stars signed Sergei Gonchar to a two-year, $10 million contract after trading for the 39-year-old defenseman last week.
MLB: Nava’s hit lifts Bosox over Rays in 14th
In St. Petersburg, Daniel Nava hit a tiebreaking single in the 14th inning and the Red Sox beat the Rays 10-8 on after squandering two late leads in a testy game that included a bench-clearing scrum. … Highly rated Cubs shortstop Javier Baez hit four home runs for Single-A Daytona in a 9-6 win over Fort Myers.
