NY town fined after it broke federal law to build ballpark

A Rockland County town has agreed to fork over a $125,000 fine and create 2.2 acres of new wetlands after admitting it broke federal environmental laws to pave way for a minor league ballpark currently the subject of an FBI probe.

The feds on Tuesday announced they have settled a 2010 civil lawsuit filed in White Plains federal court against the town of Ramapo, NY.

Under the agreement, town officials now admit to illegally allowing construction materials related to building Provident Bank Park to be dumped into local wetlands in violation of the Clean Water Act.

The 4,500-seat ballpark — which opened in 2011 and is the home of the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League – is currently under scrutiny by the FBI. Authorities are investigating the town’s financing of a project that has left taxpayers with a roughly $60 million tab after they were initially promised the ballpark would only cost $20 million – and that they wouldn’t have to pay for it.
