Walmart roasted on treatment of pigs

Walmart is squeezing the nation’s pigs while it hogs profits on pork.

That’s the charge from animal-rights groups, which say Walmart is the only major US retailer that has refused to stop selling meat from pigs raised in “gestation stalls.”

The cramped pens, which don’t give pregnant sows room to turn around, are being banned by most major meat sellers including McDonald’s, Kroger and Target, says the group, Mercy for Animals.

Meat-producers Smithfield, Hormel and Cargill have likewise committed to eliminate the stalls, the group says.

Walmart spokeswoman Danit Marquard said the stalls are “a complicated issue.”

Tyson, the world’s biggest meat producer and a supplier to Walmart, is the other major holdout, the group says.
