Unlicensed driver runs down elderly woman

An elderly woman crossing a Brooklyn street on Monday was run down and badly injured by a DirecTV vehicle whose driver had no business being behind the wheel, police said.

Police charged the driver, identified as Roger Brown, for having a suspended license, a law enforcement source said. Retired school safety agent Maude Savage, 72, was crossing Sutter Avenue in Brooklyn when the vehicle turned left from Euclid Avenue — and directly into her path, police said.

Savage was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in serious condition with head injuries, police said.

“She was bleeding from her head,” said Bruny Perez, a cashier at Mike’s Grocery Corp., a corner store at Sutter and Euclid Avenue, where the woman had just shopped.

“She comes in the store every day,” said Perez.

He added, “She had the right of way. The DirecTV truck was speeding down Euclid — I don’t know how he didn’t see her.”

Perez said he didn’t know the woman’s name, but he described her as “a very active lady” who also has an elderly sister and a son.

DirecTV released a statement, saying: “We’re continuing to look into this unfortunate incident, but it appears the van involved belongs to an independent dealer in the area and the driver is not a DIRECTV employee. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.”

The same intersection, near the Cypress Hill Houses, was a scene of mayhem on Friday afternoon, when a 14-year-old girl walking home from school was hit in the leg by a stray bullet in what police believe was an attempted gang hit gone awry.
