Red Bulls drop 2 fullbacks from roster

The Red Bulls declined to pick up the team options on fullbacks Brandon Barklage and David Carney.

Carney is eligible for Monday’s MLS Waiver Draft, while Barklage is eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Process, whcih takes place in December.

Carney had a base salary of $144,000 and a guaranteed salary of $167,000. Barklage made $65,000 base.

“First, we want to thank Brandon and David for their service to our club. Both were top professionals and contributed to our success this season in helping us win our first Supporters’ Shield,” said sporting director Andy Roxburgh. “However, with this success comes the unfortunate challenge of making difficult decisions due to salary cap and personnel considerations. We wish both of them the best of luck.”

Barklage was a successful reclamation project after three injury-riddled seasons with DC United. He signed with the Red Bulls on March 5, 2012. Playing most of his two seasons at fullback, Barklage appeared in 45 games (36 starts) and notched two goals and 10 assists.

Carney was signed by New York on Aug. 8, 2013. The left back/left winger — who played alongside the Red Bulls’ Tim Cahill on the Australian national team — started in seven games and both playoff tilts. Before coming to MLS, Carney was with Uzbekistan’s FC Bunyodkor.
