The NYPD is shelling out $200,000 to upgrade two of its bomb-squad robots to make them even better than the ones used in the Oscar-winning movie “The Hurt Locker.’’
Manufacturer Remotec, a Tennessee-based division of Northrop Grumman, plans to add two new “arms” to each of the devices to make them “a little more dexterous and capable of lifting more weight,’’ Northrop spokeswoman Janis Lamar told The Post.
The older NYPD models are “the same robot you see in the first few minutes of ‘The Hurt Locker,’ ” she said. “[The police] are just upgrading the robots they have to improve their performance.”
The robots allow bomb-squad detectives to pick up suspicious packages by remote control before they’re taken to the Rodmans Neck Firing Range in The Bronx to be handled.
