Tonya Harding’s ex: Attack on Kerrigan was ‘stupid’

Monday was the 20th anniversary of the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan — and now the ex-husband of her chief rival, Tonya Harding, concedes the incident was “pretty darn stupid.”

Jeff Stone, who was named Jeff Gillooly, when his associate clubbed Kerrigan’s knee with a metal rod, told sports Web site Deadspin that the most common question he’s asked is “Do you regret what you did?”

Yes, he said, “it was pretty ridiculous.”

Stone and three other men eventually went to prison for the Jan. 6, 1994, attack, two days before the US Figure Skating Championships, that left Kerrigan, then 24, on the ground screaming, “Why? Why? Why?”

Gillooly pleaded guilty to masterminding the attack and changed his name after getting out of jail.

Harding, 43, initially denied any involvement, but ultimately pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution of the attackers.
