Game 6 tickets most expensive in Boston history

Don’t believe MasterCard: The opportunity to see the Red Sox clinch their first World Series at Fenway Park since 1918 has a price — a big one.

As of Tuesday morning, the average list price on the resale market for a ticket to Game 6 against the Cardinals on Wednesday night was $1,860, according to TiqIq, making it the most expensive ticket in Boston sports history.

“We have seen percent jumps like that in the past for big games i.e. Carmelo’s first game in New York.  But in terms of raw dollars, a $200 increase to just get in the door is in line for huge events like the Super Bowl.” said Chris Matcovich, vice president of data & communications for TiqIq.

Despite winning the World Series in 2004 and 2007, the Red Sox won both championships on the road, causing bleacher seats available for $300 last week to jump to $1,100. On Monday night, when the Red Sox moved into position to clinch with a Game 5 victory, two tickets in the first row in a dugout box between home plate and an on-deck circle were sold for $24,000.

“We have seen percent jumps like that in the past for big games i.e. Carmelo’s first game in New York,” said Chris Matcovich, vice president of data & communications for TiqIq. “But in terms of raw dollars, a $200 increase to just get in the door is in line for huge events like the Super Bowl.”

Intimate Fenway Park’s unusually small seating (38,400) helps reduce supply and elevate price to see the Red Sox win a title at home for the first time since Sept. 11, 1918 — Game 6 of a World Series against the Cubs in which Babe Ruth went 2-0 as a pitcher for Boston.

As of Tuesday morning, there were approximately 3,000 tickets on the resale market, around half of what has been available for previous World Series games on the day before a game.

This will be Boston’s third opportunity to win a World Series at home since 1918. The Red Sox lost at Fenway Park in Game 7 against the Cardinals in 1967 and Game 7 against the Reds in 1975.
