CHUCK: CRACK DOWN ON CHINATOWN BUS

Sen. Charles Schumer called yesterday for tighter safety controls on cheap-ticket Chinatown buses, after two Boston-bound coaches caught fire and forced their passengers to flee for their lives.

The Chinatown buses offer tickets for as little as $15 one-way and are popular among college students.

“My daughter goes to college in Boston, and many of her friends ride these buses, and they said they were worried about them,” Schumer said.

Schumer called for a four-step plan that would include hiring more inspectors and increasing surprise inspections, as well as posting safety ratings at bus companies and preventing dangerous drivers and buses from going on the road.
